The Armenian Genocide...
As some may know, I am a politics/history double, and genocide studies is one of the main concentrations that I am focusing on. Last year, the I decided to do a paper on the Armenian Genocide, despite it not being an option on the syllabus, and resources being more than sparce at Trent. None the less, it was one of the more passionate essays I had written.
To this day, it is something that I still follow, and this involvement now with the United States battling between recognizing it, and not at first, seemed hopeful. However, the political mind in me sees that it is too coincidental.
The house can not get enough votes to defund the war in Iraq, withdraw, nor even force a time table. So they take a more covert, and emotionally charged route...piss off Turkey.
No one will want to say no to recognizing a genocide, unless they have no emotion, but in this case, not doing so, will jeopardize thousands living and fighting in Iraq now. The choice by Congress is a testy one, and an unfair tug at the heart strings of Americans, Armenian/Americans, Turkish/Americans, and others.
If I had more time, I would write more. I have no answer on this, this is just what it seems, and thus, to me, the democrats are assholes. If they had of proposed this years ago, or later, than it would be a godsend. There was no other purpose for my paper, than to try and stress the urgency to look at the Armenian genocide, and reaction to it, as conciquental, and that how countries still disregard it is wrong. But there are lives at stake at this point, too. So, it is an emotional coin toss. Turkey needs to realize that denial is not going to get them far.
Anyway, I have to get ready for class #2...political theory...Sorry it is so roughly written.
Tootles.
